Brief Summary

The High Warlock of Brooklyn and master of sass and glitter. Though he’s a fantastic warlock, he is quite sensitive and has a weakness for black hair and blue eyes.

Magnus Bane is the High Warlock of Brooklyn.  He loves to throw parties for both Downworlders and Shadowhunters alike.

Magnus is said to be over eight hundred years old.  He had been raised by the Silent Brothers of Madrid, Spain in the seventeenth century and received his name from them.  Previously, he had lived on a farm where his mother hung herself after she realized what Magnus was.  His ‘father’ then tried to drown him, but Magnus ended up burning his ‘father’ where he stood. He was born in the Dutch East Indies. His mother was half Indonesian and half Dutch (stated in the short story ‘Magnus’s Vow’), and her husband was Dutch.

Magnus is a warlock described as being long and lean, but not skinny, with lightly muscled arms and an inch or so taller than Alec. He is a quarter Indonesian, a quarter Dutch, and half demon. He wears all kinds of make-up, such as glitter around his eyes and lipstick. He likes to flaunt his bisexuality by wearing rainbow leather pants, sparkly belt buckles, and vibrant nail polish. Magnus has yellow/green ‘cat eyes’, which have vertical pupils, and he does not have a belly button. These are his marks for being a warlock.

Why We Like Him

“…A warlock who looks like a gay Sonic the Hedgehog and dresses like the childcatcher from chitty chitty bang bang…” I mean who wouldn’t love that? All Glitter and hair gel aside, Magnus may have the best heart of any book character out there. His character is so loveable that Cassandra Clare chose to put him in both series, and being that he is immortal, it totally works. Magnus becomes a tool at the disposal of the Shadowhunters that is used whenever they need help protecting their wold… let’s just say he is in the books a lot. Magnus has no connection or reason to help the nephilim, besides his boyfriend. He does everything for Alec if he needs it. And he used to do everything for Will, and Will was straight! In the end, Magnus puts others needs above his own, and is one of the greatest book characters of all time. – malfoyorwayland

I love his character design- also his aloofness was entertaining. – Burdge-bug
